Reading non-fiction isn’t the same as historical fiction since non-fiction is something real that happened recently and historical fiction is something based off of something that might of happened (depending on the story) more then a hundred years ago.

When you want to write a historical fiction (and I’ve done this before so I’ve had experience) you have to do some research. Definitely a lot of research if you want to do this.
I wrote a story for a project at school and spent 3 hours researching everything about Joan of Arc. So, if you are committed I suggest that you put some time into researching.

As for a class you could take, I’m only 13 and I know that literature and any kind of world history class would be useful.

    Good luck!

You shouldn’t choose your college courses with a view to becoming a professional novelist. You do realise, right, that becoming a novelist isn’t something that you just do when you graduate from college? You’ll need to start off in another career and write in your spare time until you’ve managed to produce something publishable. For most writers, that doesn’t happen until they’re past 30 – more usually, past 40, in fact. If you are interested in writing and history then choose English and History courses, but plenty of writers of historical fiction don’t have those degrees, so don’t choose them solely because you think they will somehow qualify you automatically as an author. They won’t.

Yes, of course reading non-fiction helps in writing historical fiction. How on earth do you think you’d ever be able to write a novel set in another time period without doing factual research about it? It’s quite literally impossible to write historical fiction without having read any non-fiction about that period history.
